Battle of Antrim Walking Tour
The Battle of Antrim was a pivotal battle in the 1798 Rebellion and indeed a pivotal event in the history of Europe. This walking tour of Antrim will follow the course of the Battle through the town highlighting the key flashpoints and events of 7 June 1798.
Beginning at Pogues Entry, you will discover the history of the location and what it represented. From here, you will walk in the footsteps of the United Irishmen and make your way down to All Saints Anglican Church where Stephen will talk about the United Irish columns entering the town from Templepatrick/Donegore, and who was in charge.
In the Churchyard, hear details of the battle as the cannons opened up on the failed cavalry charge tasked with quickly dispersing Jimmy Hopes Spartan Brigade. The tour will then take you down to The Old Court House with a commentary of what happened throughout the walk, including where James Clements grabbed Lord O`Neil where he received his pike wound.
Entering the Barbican gate, the tour will end at the Antrim Castle battlements rising above the town, where we will discuss folklore and other logistics of the Battle.
Duration: 90 minutes
Participants must be able to walk for up to 2 hours over flat ground.
The tour is wheelchair/mobility scooter friendly, and dog friendly (all dogs to be kept on leads)
